My Employment Journey
Hello! My name is Brian Lory. As you can see from my resume and LinkedIn profile, I have a very diverse set of work experiences, in fact, I often say that it looks like someone copied and pasted my resume from three or four different people.
I originally attended Ball State as a broadcasting major where I acquired my presentation skills and ability to speak in front of an audience or in front of a camera. I realized that broadcasting wasn't for me and ended up at Charles Schwab (even though I had never taken a business class!). At Schwab, I started out in outbound sales on the Great Lakes call team. While on this team, I helped put together sales training material for other outbound business development teams. A few years later, I decided to join the retirement services department at Schwab. During this time, I helped explain difficult IRS regulations to small business owners as well as retirees.
After Schwab, I worked for a small Financial Advisory firm with around six full time employees. I primarily worked in financial and investment research. Occasionally, I would present material to our clients at our quarterly meetings that covered topics ranging from the basics of mutual funds to real estate investment trusts (REITS)...and anything in between!
In 2009, I took an opportunity to go back to school to obtain my M.S. in Biology at IUPUI in Indianapolis. While attending, I was a recitation leader (similar to a TA) for Biology K101 for three semesters in which I would help explain scientific concepts to students as well as participate in curriculum that I developed. As a graduate student, I took several different classes which included Molecular Biology, Plant Molecular Biology, the Molecular Biology of Cancer, Physiology, as well as Embryology.
After graduation, I worked as one of the Science instructors at Medtech College. While there, I taught several classes including general biology, microbiology, pathophysiology, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology. At this time, I also taught some classes that were a hybrid model of virtual and in-person classes. I was responsible for curriculum design for all of my classes. My experience here was beneficial in that it gave me experience teaching non-traditional students. Not only did my students come from diverse backgrounds, they also were primarily older students. This was beneficial in giving me experience teaching adult learners as opposed to someone fresh out of school. My students had often already been in the workplace for a decade or more before deciding to go back to school.

Eventually, I decided to put some of my lab skills to use and ended up working at Kelly Services as a contractor at Corteva Agriscience. I started off as an assistant plant pathologist where I worked specifically on fungal diseases that affected soybeans. Our focus was to find cultivars resistant to these fungal diseases. I was working under a group that was not located onsite where I was working. So, I was responsible for my own lab. After a merger, I ended up working in seed treatment. I worked in the nematicide department of seed treatment. We worked primarily with soybean cyst nematode and RKN (root knot nematode) which affected several vegetable crops such as tomatoes, eggplants, and squash. in cooperation with our Discovery Chemistry department, I was responsible for testing the various chemicals to see which might have promise as a seed treatment. I was also involved in nematode culture as well as presenting the results of our experiments.

After Covid hit, I took some time off to help my four kids finish their last three months of school. I then started working as a training specialist at Orchard Software. Orchard Software specializes in LIS (laboratory information systems). Even though I had no prior experience working with this software, I began teaching my first training classes a month later. All of these classes were taught virtually, as we were still in the midst of Covid-19 precautions. Due to savings in both space and travel expenses, we continued to teach our training classes virtually via Microsoft Teams. When not doing training presentations, my fellow training colleagues and I were busy helping to create eLearning content for our employees as well as for customers using software such as Articulate and Rise 360. After Orchard was acquired by another company, a reorganization resulted in a loss of employment since the product that I trained was being phased out.

About Me.
I am the father of four boys that keep my wife and I very busy. We spend most of our free time attending the various activities and sports that my kids love to participate in.
One of my favorite things to do is travel. Some of my favorite places that I have travelled internationally are Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon, South Africa (Durban area), London, Paris, and Belize.

If I am not attending one of my kids' activities, I enjoy attending the Indy 500 every year and cheering on the Colts and Pacers here in the Indy area. You may also occasionally see me at a karaoke or trivia night as well.
